The Drive in a Nutshell
Jibhi is a small village tucked in the Tirthan Valley of Himachal Pradesh, at an altitude of about 2,150 metres. Delhi to Jibhi by road is approximately 530–560 km depending on where you start in Delhi — expect a drive of 10 to 12 hours with normal stops.
The route is well-established: NH44 (Delhi–Chandigarh Expressway) for the first four hours, then NH205 through the Shivalik foothills to Kiratpur, then the dramatic NH305 as the road climbs through Mandi, passes through the Aut Tunnel, and descends into the Tirthan and Sainj valleys.
The last 40–50 km after the tunnel is the most beautiful — and the most winding. No overtaking, no rushing.

Road Tips Before You Leave
🌅Start at 4–5 AM
You clear Delhi traffic before it builds, hit the hills by noon, and arrive before dark. Night driving on mountain roads after Mandi is risky.
⛽Fill fuel in Chandigarh & Banjar
Petrol pumps exist between these points but can be sparse. Don't leave Mandi on low fuel.
🚗Aut Tunnel traffic
The tunnel is a single-lane bottleneck during peak weekends. Check if there's a queue before entering — sometimes a 20-minute wait.
📵Mobile signal drops after Banjar
Download offline Google Maps for the Banjar–Jibhi stretch. BSNL works best in the valley; Jio and Airtel are patchy.
❄️Winter driving (Nov–Mar)
Snow is possible above Jalori Pass and on side roads. Carry chains if visiting December–February. The main Banjar–Jibhi road is usually clear.
🏔️Respect the mountain roads
Roads after Mandi are narrow with sharp bends. Horn on blind curves, stay left, and don't rush the last 50 km.

Last Mile: Aut to Jibhi
At Aut, take a right turn off the highway onto the valley road toward Banjar and Jibhi. You have three options to cover this stretch:
Shared Cab — ₹500 per person
Shared taxis wait near the Aut bus stop in the morning. They fill up and go — usually 4–6 passengers. Most drop till Banjar or Jibhi directly. Cheapest option for solo travellers.
Private Taxi — ₹1,500–3,000
Price depends on vehicle type — a hatchback is cheaper, an SUV or Innova costs more. Worth it for groups of 3–4 or if you have luggage. Takes 1.5–2 hours to Jibhi.
Local Bus — ₹70–100
HRTC local buses run Aut → Banjar a few times a day but timings are erratic. Only viable if you're not in a hurry and don't have a fixed check-in time.
Pro tip: WhatsApp your accommodation the night before — most properties can arrange a pickup from Aut for a fixed rate.
Bus Travel Tips
- · Book at least 2–3 days ahead on weekends and holidays — buses fill up fast, especially May–June and October.
- · Lower berths are more comfortable on mountain roads; upper berths sway more on bends.
- · Carry a light blanket even in summer — AC buses get cold overnight.
- · Keep your bag with you or in an overhead rack; don't put valuables in the luggage hold.
- · Save your accommodation's contact and address offline — signal drops after Aut.
- · If motion-sick prone, take medication before boarding — the Mandi–Banjar stretch has sharp curves.
