Route 1: Via Mandi & Aut

Recommended

The most accessible and reliable route. From Shimla, head toward Ghagas and Sundernagar on NH5, then join the Chandigarh–Manali highway at Sundernagar or Mandi. From Mandi, continue north to the Aut Tunnel — the road to Jibhi branches off to the right just before the tunnel entrance, into the Tirthan Valley.

This route is well-paved throughout, works in all seasons, and is the one to choose if you are travelling by bus, with a family, or in a standard sedan.

1

Shimla

Start point — head toward Ghagas on NH5

2

Ghagas / Sundernagar

~90 km · ~2.5 hrs — joins the main Chandigarh-Manali highway. Good fuel and food stop.

3

Mandi

~130 km · ~3.5 hrs — ideal lunch stop. Last major town before the mountains.

4

Aut

~160 km · ~4.5 hrs — take the road on the right toward Banjar and Jibhi. Do not enter the tunnel.

5

Banjar → Jibhi

~185–200 km · ~5.5–6 hrs — narrow valley road through pine forests. Almost there.

Route 2: Via Jalori Pass

Scenic · Seasonal

The more dramatic option — Shimla → Narkanda → Sainj → Anni → Jalori Pass (3,120 m) → Shoja → Jibhi. Slightly shorter in distance at around 160–170 km but takes 5–7 hours due to the challenging mountain road over the pass.

The views from Jalori Pass are extraordinary — pine forests, Himalayan peaks, and the feeling of arriving in Jibhi through the back door. But this route demands respect.

1

Shimla

Take NH5 toward Narkanda

2

Narkanda

~65 km · ~1.5 hrs — scenic apple country. Good chai stop.

3

Sainj

~110 km · ~2.5 hrs — branch point. Turn left toward Anni here; the road straight ahead leads to Rampur Kinnaur (not your route). Fuel up before turning.

4

Anni

~140 km · ~4 hrs — road quality begins to vary. The climb toward Jalori Pass starts from here.

5

Jalori Pass

~155 km · ~5 hrs — 3,120 m altitude. Closed in winter. Take it slow on the descent.

6

Shoja → Jibhi

~165–170 km · ~6–7 hrs — the descent from Jalori into the Tirthan Valley is stunning but narrow.
